What is a Doula?

A doula is a professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to a woman and her partner before, during, and after childbirth. The word “doula” is derived from ancient Greek and means “a woman who serves”.

Doulas do not provide medical care, but rather offer non-medical, evidence-based guidance and support. During childbirth, doulas may assist with relaxation techniques, pain management strategies, and other comfort measures. They also provide emotional support to help the birthing person and their partner feel calm and confident during labor and delivery.

Additionally, some doulas offer postpartum support, which can include breastfeeding support, newborn care, and emotional support for new parents as they adjust to life with a new baby. The goal of a doula is to help facilitate a positive and empowering birth experience for the birthing person and their partner.

“Whenever and however you give birth, your experience
will impact your emotions, your mind, your body,
and your spirit for the rest of your life.”

-Ina May Gaskin

Benefits of a Doula

There are many benefits to having a doula present during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Here are some of the key benefits:

  1. Reduced need for pain medication: Studies have shown that women who have a doula present during childbirth are less likely to use pain medication or require interventions like forceps or vacuum-assisted delivery.
  2. Shorter labor: Women who have a doula present during labor tend to have shorter labors and are less likely to need a cesarean section.
  3. Increased satisfaction with the birth experience: Women who have a doula present during childbirth report higher levels of satisfaction with their birth experience and feel more confident and supported throughout labor and delivery.
  4. Improved breastfeeding outcomes: Doulas can provide valuable support and guidance to help new mothers initiate and maintain breastfeeding.
